During the late Cretaceous Era, about 70 million years ago, North America was divided by a shallow sea called the Western Interior Seaway. The seaway was a habitat for a plethora of prehistoric marine life, including various ancient species of ammonite. Over millions of years, geologic and tectonic forces unique to the St. Mary River Basin transformed ammonites into spectacular "gemified" specimens. These fossils are deemed cultural treasures of Canada, requiring a special federal export permit to leave their birthplace.
AURORA Ammolite Mine
The mine is nestled in a valley along the St. Mary River in southern Alberta, about 50 miles north of the Montana-Canada border, and 70 miles east of the majestic Rocky Mountains. The Aurora Ammolite Mine is highly prolific, recovering various ammonite and baculite species; and on occasion, spectacular discoveries of extremely rare Mosasaurs and Plesiosaurs, which are recovered under the supervision of the world renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum.
